Roxbury is annexed by Boston.

June 1, 1867

Massachusetts legislature approves the move after a legislative committee studying the issue declares, “The benefits to Roxbury, the necessities of Boston, and the interests of the Commonwealth sanction and require annexation.” Residents approve the annexation by a margin of 1,832-592 on September 9, 1867. It takes effect, adding 2,450 acres to Boston, on January 1, 1868.
